Enamored with Glass - part #10

Carnival Glass
From Wikipedia:

Carnival glass is an inexpensive pressed glass, made as both functional and ornamental objects, always iridescent and found in a wide spectrum of colors. It was produced in the U.S., Britain, Australia, and several European and Asian countries from the early 20th century until the present. Carnival glass gets its iridescent sheen from the application of metallic salts while the glass is still hot from the pressing, then re-firing the glass. Glass workers sometimes refer to carnival glass as "dope glass" because the process of applying the iridescent coloring to the surface is called "doping".

My aunt found these beautiful pieces of Carnival Glass at a garage sale quite a few years ago.

When she was moving to a smaller apartment about 3 years ago she gave me this beautiful bowl, a pair of candle holders, and the creamer and sugar bowl. The red is such a pretty color and is a lovely accent on any table or just sitting in my china cupboard. I had to include a picture of the bottom of the bowl, as I think it is so pretty.

When I started this Enamored with Glass Monday series I thought maybe five weeks. Looking around my house I found I loved glass more than I realized. I would guess you probably have more glass in your house than you realize also. So on we go, I think I have at least 2-4 more weeks of glass. Then there will be another give away of something glass. How fun, I love giving away things.

  1. I love Carnival Glass! I don't have any, but a friend does and it's amazing stuff!

BTW - the movie is official now. Early June.

  2. I recently saw an article that showed the nifty idea of using the decorative bottom of a glass as a "cookie stamp" to impress a design onto shortbread. Don't know if you could hold your bowl "just so" in order to try that, but ... wouldn't that make a stunning design!

  3. Hi, Marilyn -
I love your glass - and I've really enjoyed seeing it so I'm glad you have more! I was thinking happy thoughts of you this morning. Can't wait to see you again soon. Our friend, Miss Betty, is out of town with family so we'll get together when she gets back. Hope you're having a good Monday even though it's a bit foggy outside after our gorgeous sunny day yesterday.

  6. Your Carnival Glass pieces are really pretty. I like the red color. You're right about having a lot of glass around the house. I collect glass baskets and other pieces that I find at yard sales.

  8. These are so lovely!! I like the red undertones of your pieces here. I recall my Mom having had her grandparents large carnival glass pitcher that was used for serving iced tea in the summer--it was all golden and amber colors with a wheat leaf-type pattern... I wonder what became of that, haven't see it for years! I look forward to your weekly glass posts, Marilyn! :o) Happy Day ((HUGS))

  9. I'm a glass lover myself, especially coming in through a window. I adore stained glass and have two pieces. I was thinking recently I would love to just go sit in a church with stained glass and just well, breathe...
