At the end of the garden season, we often have green tomatoes still in the garden.
Some of them will ripen on the kitchen counter, but my favorite thing to do with them is make what we call Chow-Chow. A special Autumn relish, which nicely pairs with meat or even on a sandwich.
It is a recipe I have used for a very long time and thought you might also enjoy it.
Chow-Chow
20 medium green tomatoes
8 large apples (unpeeled) I like to use Granny Smith here.
8 medium sized onions
3 green peppers
2 red peppers
1 tablespoon each of salt, celery seed, mustard seed, turmeric, cinnamon
5 cups sugar
3 cups apple cider vinegar
Grind all the vegetables and drain well.
Put into a large kettle, add seasonings, sugar, and vinegar.
Bring to a boil and cook 30 minutes.
Put into jars and seal.
Note: I seal without a water bath, but keep everything very hot.
You may feel safer to use a water bath, whatever makes you most comfortable here.
ENJOY!

I'm keeping this one Marilyn, for next year. All the green tomatoes are gone. This sounds so good. I also make a hot dog relish with green tomatoes that's really good. This will go in my recipe box right next to that. Thank-you!
ReplyDeleteLooks delicious and spicy! I don't think I have ever had green tomatoes. Do you use this as salsa?
ReplyDeleteI was the very lucky recipient of a jar of chow chow! I used it as a tea party sandwich...with cream cheese and this relish. Delicious!
ReplyDeleteYUMMY--I like chow chow! Such pickles are big thing from the place I grew up in. I've never made this before though. I've not much luck growing tomatoes successfully here, and never seen green tomatoes at the shops--never, sadly. Oh, LOVED your caramel popcorn the other day too...mmm..I feel so hungry now...LOL! Happy Halloween, Marilyn ((HUGS)) P.S Will sweet new grandybaby be a pumpkin this year? ;o)
ReplyDeleteYou are making my lips smack.
ReplyDeleteWHY do I always seem to read this kind of post when I am already hungry?!!
ReplyDeleteI'm going to save this one. We DID have a TON of green apples, but they actually did ripen up in the bag and alas, are gone. But next year, we expect a bumper crop. This really looks very different (with the apples) and all. I could definitely see it kicking up a turkey sandwich!
