Fragrance

No man can taste the fruits of autumn while he
is delighting his scent with the flowers of spring.
~Samuel Johnson

Someone recently mentioned a fragrance of a particular tea recently
and I began thinking of fragrance.
What fragrances bring memories to you?
Fragrance plays a large part in our memories.
As I think on fragrance this week,
I will take time to share with you,
but for now I would love to know your memories.
Then let's all take a moment to smell the flowers.

  1. The aroma that immediately comes to mind is the smell of tomato juice when my grandmother would can it. It's not a necessarily pleasant smell - it's pungent, but it definitely reminds me of Grandma's house!

  2. Lily of the valley is my birth month flower, but the fragrance always takes me back to those pocket-sized Liddle Kiddle dolls when I was a kid. They had a lily of the valley fragrance one, and I can smell it even now. And of course Love's Baby Soft and Jean Naté (showing my age!) take me back to high school!

  3. Indeed, I can smell them right here! My favorites? Lily of the Valley, narcissus and any herb!

  4. How interesting that two people have already mentioned Lily of the Valley. That is the first one I thought of, too - it always reminds me of my mother. My grandmother brought her a huge bouquet of it when I was born, maybe that's the start of the fragrance memory for me! I'm sure there are other fragrances that evoke memories but I think that is my strongest one.

  5. I love single note floral fragrances most - always have. That's not very sophisticated of me, maybe, but that's what I love. Lillies, lilacs, lily of the valley, roses, and my favorite, peonies.
