Happy Halloween

In the Dark of the Moon

In the dark of the moon,
Beware! Have a care!
Of the ring at the door
And nobody there.

Of the soap hieroglyphics
On the clean pane;
Of hushed, ghostly giggles;
Of steps down a lane.

Beware! Have a care!
Of the small shape in white
With a pumpkiny lantern,
Its features alight.

No use to be looking
Stern, staid and sober-
Better turn goblin
This night in October.

  1. What a wonderful poem for Halloween Marilyn🎃
    I haven’t heard it before.
    There was no Halloween when I was a child - just All Hallows’ Eve - the night before All Souls Day on 1st November.
    Followed by All Saints Day on the 2nd November.

    How things have changed! This of course is inevitable as the years and generations move on, however it’s the commercial aspect I’m not so comfortable about.
    I could go on and on but I won’t, as I’m sure most of my readers think the same way and it’s not for me to preach - I’m an observer...... just saying !!!
    Xx

  2. Have a fun All Hallow's Eve - I just bet your lovely neigborhood has many youngsters and you'll be kept busy Marilyn. I hope we get a good crowd once it turns dark.

    Hugs Mary - tonight 'the witch' in black with a mask.

    P.S. Candles in lanterns on the porch - 'carved' papier maché lighted pumpkins along the porch rail, and bags of candy hopefully gone soon so Bob doesn't eat them, haha!
