April Raptures

No April Words

There are no words for saying
How wistful is the push
Of April through the budding
Of a lilac bush.

There are no notes for making
A little elfin air
Of new leaves on a willow;
No phrases to compare

With tapering blue hyacinths;
The first white butterfly;
With plum trees misted sudden
Silver on the sky. . .

One may only listen--
Hand at throat-to rapture
More lyrically lovely
Than my song may capture.

from Kitchen Sonnets by Ethel Romig Fuller

As April comes to an end what JOY's have been displayed in your part of the world?
I am totally enraptured by the pink blossoms, the sway of the daffodils, the clusters
of grape hyacinths, and the return of the robins song.

  2. Besides the fact that April is my birthday month, I think it is my favorite month because of all the flowers that bloom here - those you mentioned are among them, along with dogwoods, violets, and a multitude of wildflowers. Love the poem and especially your beautiful photo.

  7. My joys today are sunshine, a bit of warmth (the window is open and Lizzie is loving it!) and seedlings popping! Yes, spring is maybe really here. Maybe. This is Michigan. There are few certainties!

  8. Is someone didn't know what April was, they need only to read your beautiful words, you sum it up nicely in a sentence.

  10. Such a delicate and wistful photo Marilyn - perfect to illustrate this sweet kitchen sonnet. Ranunculus and forget-me-nots - a lovely combo.

    I wish I could write about Nature that way!

    Hugs, and thanks for your wishes.

  11. Spring has been slow coming to Michigan. The daffodils are just now blooming and the forsythia bushes are budding, but the robins have been back awhile promising spring is on its way! Beautiful picture today!

  13. What an elegantly serene photo! I am always smitten by the beauty of a simple spray of flowers in an old glass bottle. Lavish arrangements are pretty when you see them, but a tiny bit of nature, simply displayed, just can't be beat!
