Mother's Day Confession

Mother's Day in the US is Sunday, unless you didn't know.  (Smiling)
Do you celebrate this day?
Do you love it?
What do you do to celebrate mom's?

I have a confession to make.
I have never liked Mother's Day.
I am trying to change that and learn to savor the day.
On the other hand, I am so excited for my daughter,
who is celebrating her 2nd year as a mom.

It's all about expectations!
I put too many expectations on the day instead of just enjoying.
Do we put too many expectations on special events?
Do we want all the things we see in magazines and online, especially on pinterest?
I often have wondered it I am the only crazy mom out there with these thoughts?
I would love comments on your feelings of Mother's Day.

But in the meantime, if I could send you flowers and a cup of tea to delight your day, I would.
Sit and savor the day, soak up the love and sunshine and just enjoy being a mom and/or having a mom.
This is what I will be doing on Sunday.

Happy Mother's Day, dear friends!

  1. i don't put any pressure on myself or anyone else for mother's day….

i think my kids celebrate me daily, as i do my mom…so no need for a day to be reminded of the love that is so powerfully already present…..xoxo

  2. My expectations are somewhat low always…… but then at least one of the offspring usually comes through and helps pull off another of those days which have become too commercial for me! I loved "Mothering Sunday" when a little girl in England, a card and a bunch of flowers was all mum expected and enjoyed - but this rather brash celebration here has gone beyond enjoyment and is in fact somewhat of an embarrassment for many. In all honesty, I suppose I loved being the daughter but not so much the mom!
My daughter called a restaurant where she thought we could do lunch this Sun. - no lunch available just brunch at $65 per head - disgusting! Instead we are heading to an Irish pub (don't laugh!) for fish and chips - sounds perfect to me!

Anyway - as I've already said Marilyn, have a lovely day, flowers and a cuppa to you, enjoy!
    Love, Mary

  3. Have a wonderful Mother's Day, dear friend! Whatever you do, enjoy it completely. I have high expectations for special days because my mother made the most of them when I was a child. My expectations have had to change a bit over the years as my children grew up, married and had their own families. But, I am blessed! Very blessed!

  5. Mothers Day has been hard for me since my mom died 37 years ago. I know. Get over it. But I think it's a wonderful day to recognize all the moms in the world. Without them, where would we be?

  6. I've been thinking along these lines myself. Too many expectations lead to disappointments, for certain.
As someone else said above, I like being the daughter rather than the mother.
That said, my husband took me out for breakfast this morning and we are getting together with two of our adult children and their families for dinner tonight. I'm blessed, indeed.
Hope your weekend is wonderful, Marilyn, and that your Mother's Day leaves you feeling contented.

  7. I blame the greeting card companies and advertising for any unrealistic expectations. Each family is unique and has their own dynamic in celebrating/honoring/remembering. What happens or doesn't happen shouldn't be imposed on us. Hope you had a lovely Mother's Day, Marilyn.

  8. My Mother's Day was definitely different this year since a) my mother had passed away and b) I was in Italy. But, I didn't spend the day mourning, as I had feared, and instead thought of all the happy times we had together. Interesting to read your perspective -- since I was never blessed with children, I assumed all moms loved Mother's Day. It's helpful to me to hear a different perspective, and you know, we can put "too many expectations" on lots of things in life, so I share that with you!
