Self Care

With the new year I once again think of "self care".
What do I need to do for myself.

Here is what I have thought of so far:

1. Develop regular sleep pattern
2. Eat regular, healthy meals
3. Exercise
4. Take walks in nature
5. If needed, talk to a professional to work through life's difficulties
5. Laugh
6. Create space for "Me Time" to read a book, sip a cup of tea,
a massage, or watch a movie that makes you smile
 7. Spend time with friends

What can you add to the list?
What do you do for "self care"?
Do you find a secret retreat?
A place to put your feet up?

“Self care is never a selfish act — it is simply good stewardship of the only gift I have, the gift I was put on earth to offer others.” — Parker Palmer

Note: All pictures were taken today at the Kennedy School near my home. It is a place to retreat for awhile, to have something good to eat, watch a movie, enjoy the art, or soak in the soaking pool.

This is a nice place to be able to rest and spend some "me time." I think it's important to have alone time. And you asked "what do you do for self care?" Spending time in nature always does it for me. It's where I think, pray, reflect, and dream. I love 4 and 6 on your list, Marilyn.

I don't answer the phone. And of course, many of the things you mentioned. But answering the phone aggravates me! (I will check caller ID because not EVERYONE aggravates me!)

Nice post. January is a good time to improve our "self-care>"

What a NICE retreat center! I would go there a lot. ;) That's a great list for self care, Marilyn! My own looks very much like it, with the addition of daily prayer time. I especially like that you have laugh on the list, as laughter is great medicine--a daily dose can do so much. :) January is a good time to take stock of things, and see if any tweaking needs to be done for big things or small things. This time of the year is the best time to provide some 'me time'! I love the long quiet hours of down-time. Your list for self care is a good one - and the one I concentrate on this month is eating healthy. Taking the time to prepare healthy meals, and reinforcing good eating habits now that all the cookies and candy have disappeared!

In this deep, dark, mid winter, I try to use the hibernation prompt, which I believe Nature gives us... To seek inside myself... Find ways I can better "care for myself." Because, that is what it is. The contemplation I try to do now... Finding better ways to live my daily life, to better care for me.

Health is our most important asset. All we can do, to foster our health and that of those near... all those things, are very important.

And in daily life, we let ourselves get set in patterns. Patterns which may not be working best for us now. We need a time to look deep inside, and question everything. Find 'keepers'... And other things, which no longer serve us well.

That is what I want to do, with this time of Nature's hibernation. Slow down and seek, within myself.
